Join guest tutor Tina Zhang for this workshop all about making soft slab tableware. Known for her mindful, simple yet elegant approach to handbuilt ceramics, Tina will guide you through the process of designing and making your own botanical print serving ware.
Using slab techniques, you'll learn how to build strong, functional pieces— such as platters, side dishes, and bowls—without them becoming too thick or heavy for everyday use. Tina will share her tips and tricks for working with slabs that hold their shape and survive the kiln without cracking or warping, as well as working with large scale slabs. Learn how to decorate your surfaces with botanical imprints, and then different different ways of shaping your clay, including using hump molds.
This workshop will help you construct functional, botanical-printed tableware with confidence, giving you the skills—and the guest expertise—to build a set of dishes that brighten up your table.
This workshop is suitable for beginners, as well as people with prior handbuilding experience who want to hone their skills and learn new techniques.
Students are encouraged to bring their own botanicals.

About the ArtistTina Zhang is a ceramic artist who discovered clay three years ago and never looked back. Working primarily with slab-built forms, she delights in the surprising process of coaxing three-dimensional shapes out of flat sheets of clay through considered cuts and folds. Her pieces draw deeply from nature. Plants gathered from neighbourhood walks frequently find their way into her basket and then into her work, pressed into clay and preserved into hardwearing stoneware. This partnership with the natural world means that her work is highly seasonal, with botanical motifs shifting as the year unfolds. Every now and then, an unexpected creature makes an appearance, too! Tina's ceramics aim to be functional, elegant and simple - pieces intended for everyday use and wear, while carrying a little gift from nature.
